Interested in picking up the basics behind custom mold building and hand built tableware? Join us for a six week course at our working pottery studio in South East Asheville. Participants can expect a relaxed and collaborative environment with one on one instruction and support. Perfect for first time potters and suited for professionals looking to reconnect with their craft.

Participants will use a native North Carolina clay from the StarWorks Clay company. Participants will use the glazes formulated by Melissa Weiss. All dishes will be high fired to cone 10 in a gas reduction kiln on site. Over the span of six weeks students will make molds for an entree and bowl. These forms will then be used to create a set of finished tableware utilizing slab construction. This is strictly a hand building class and participants can expect to get dirty and have fun. Workshop is limited to 6. Registration is for people 16 and older.

Cost of the course includes all materials for making a plate setting for 2 consisting of two dishes each (for a total of 8 dishes) as well as glazing and firing fees. Light snacks and beverages will be provided each class. The final class will culminate with a homemade vegetarian meal.

Day One: Introduction to materials and studio. Make the basic shape of the molds.

Day Two: Work on molds to further define and shape the form.

Day Three: Finish the molds.

Day Four: Use the slab roller to roll out slabs to begin making dishes using your custom bisqued molds.

Day Five: Continue making the slab dishes finishing them.

Day Six: Glaze and decorate the bisqued dishes.

You will walk away with:

A folder of melissa weiss pottery tips. A finished set of tableware for four including entree and soup dishes. All your dishes will be functional, food, microwave and dishwasher safe.
